What Are Keys for in Diablo 2: Resurrected?

Diablo 2 Resurrected

Keys: you’ll amass a lot of them if you pick them up like a kleptomaniac in Diablo 2: Resurrected. The question is: what are they for?

The answer is what you’d expect: opening things. More specifically, in Diablo 2: Resurrected they’re used to open locked chests, which are randomly placed around the environments you explore. The benefit is that locked chests typically contain more loot, although it’s debatable if the items provided have an increased chance of being rare. Regardless, any chest you leave locked is a missed opportunity for a valuable item such as a Rune or perhaps even a Unique.

Thankfully, using keys in Diablo 2: Resurrected is easy. In fact, you don’t need to do anything special. Just interact with a locked chest like you would a normal chest, and as long as you have a key in your inventory it will be opened. It’s always worth carrying some keys, then, and thanks to a number of them stacking, they don’t even take up much space. We tend to just keep one or two stacks of them, selling or dropping those we pick up in excess.

There’s one final thing to keep in mind regarding keys in Diablo 2: Resurrected, though. If you’re playing as an Assassin, you don’t need them. The Assassin, being skilled in subterfuge, can presumably pick any lock, allowing them to open any chest they encounter without the need for a key. Handy, huh? So, if you want to maximise inventory space and open all chests you discover on your travels, play as an Assassin.
